The University fully recognizes and honors the 2024 Kansas Senate Bill 333. WSU is committed to providing employment opportunities throughout the organization to qualified applicants that have physical, cognitive and/or mental disabilities.

Applicants that have physical, cognitive and/or mental disabilities may claim an employment preference when applying for Benefit Eligible positions. Applicants who meet the criteria for Disability Hiring Preference shall be designated as "Hiring Preference" in the Applicant Tracking System for priority consideration of the qualified applicant during the application review process. If they meet the minimum qualifications and are qualified to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without a reasonable accommodation, they will receive a first-level interview for the position. The preference does not guarantee an applicant the job, as positions are filled with the best qualified candidate as determined by the hiring manager.

Any person wishing to be considered for Disability Preference must submit documentation to show that they have a physical, cognitive and/or mental disability. Documentation that will be accepted includes any one of the following:

  1. Supplemental security income or social security disability insurance determination letter
  2. Letter from a managed care organization or a qualified medical professional attesting to the disability
  3. Home and community-based services waiver approval letter
  4. Vocational rehabilitation letter from a vocational rehabilitation counselor

To be considered for Disability Preference, an Applicant must submit required documentation to the WSU Office of Human Resources for verification. Documentation can be submitted by fax to 316-978-3201 or by email to totalrewards@wichita.edu with notation of Disability Hiring Preference. All submitted documentation will be kept confidential and will be used solely for the purposes of the preference.

Required documentation should be submitted to the Office of Human Resources (OHR) no later than the closing date indicated in the job announcement for the position. Applicants who are unable to provide the documentation prior to the closing date should contact OHR to request an exception.

Any Applicant who previously submitted documentation who wishes to discontinue their voluntary disclosure of disability and eligibility for this preference should contact OHR.
