Classroom Molecular Biology Debuts at Three High Schools

The GK-12 fellows have worked hard for several months to develop two molecular biology activities for high school classrooms. Using equipment funded by NSF, the fellows worked out the details of a DNA fingerprinting activity that includes gel electrophoresis and resctriction enzyme digestions. A second activity was focused on molecular microbial ecology. The protocols were delivered to GK-12 teacher fellows at three target schools for development into lesson and unit plans. The goal is to bring these activities to the entire district, eventually impacting the 2000 students taking biology each year. Learn more about teacher training and the activities.
